I’m Stylish! Who knew!

March 1, 2011

OK, OK, I am pretty late with this. Not because I wasn’t thrilled and flattered. I just had some other things already prepared/I felt needed to be talk about (STAND WITH PLANNED PARENTHOOD ~ the fight isn’t over!).

Sooo… over two weeks ago (damn but time flies) a great blogess, Thoughs Appear (she’s clearly awesome for her Empire Records reference) crowned me with the Stylish Blogger Award. Who woulda thunk it.

As a receiver of said Award, I have to do the following:

  • Present seven things about yourself.
  • Name about a half dozen bloggers you think deserve the award. Contact those people.
  • Create a link back to the person who gave you the honor.

I know this is a bit different from what I usually post about, but what the heck. Plus, how can I ignore such an honor?

And, really, you know a lot about what I think but… less about me. That’s kind of on purpose (since I blog anonymously)… but maybe you’re curious…

So. Without further ado…

  1. I learned to swim before I could walk.
  2. I’ve had my heart broken but have never been in love.
  3. I love really excellent, fresh cuts of fish (specific species only) and red meat I can eat raw. Or, if you must, show it a grill. And then my plate.
  4. Despite being a raging carnivore, I have a significant problem with the way we mass produce food in this country. In protest, I was a vegetarian for six years and vegan for two. It was torture – but worth it.
  5. Thank goodness for being able to “go local“: Now the only things I buy from the grocery are: nuts, olive and grapesead oil, balsamic vinegar, ingredients for granola, and sometimes dried fruit. This makes me ridiculously happy.
  6. I have a terrible sense of direction. Sometimes, I pretend this is not true. Do not listen to me when I do that.
  7. I’ve had two jobs researching animals I never saw (Canada lynx and river otters), and two others where I held my subjects every day (birds in Hawai’i and Jamaica). I’ve held one of the world’s largest hummingbirds, and one of the smallest. And the smallest dove.

Exciting, eh?

OK… now I have to spread the love…

If I tag you… don’t feel pressure to re-post ~ just know I think you’re stylin’ and think you might not mind writing some random stuff!
😀

Have fun, kids! Hope you enjoyed these lil tidbits… And I’m a busy bee this week ~ guest posting with Met Another Frog again soon!

Much love,

~ Nikki ~

First of all… congratulations! You so deserve the award!! Always looking forward to reading your posts.

Second… loved the random facts. Good to know there is someone else but me that has a terrible sense of direction. Can’t believe you went vegan out of protest… it would probabaly kill me if I did that ..OK maybe not kill but you get the drift.

Thirdly… thank you for the tag! Good to know I do not write total shite hehe 😀

Thanks! And yes – I take after my mom with the directions-thing. I did spend a summer on a job where we needed maps and compasses daily – that was the only time my sense of direction got better. It wore off.

Being vegan wasn’t as tough as it sounds. I cooked a lot of Asian food. But – once I could “go local” – I realized what I’d been missing! Mainly in the meat category – I still don’t eat much cheese. Fresh yogurt from a local farm is a staple for me, however.

Nope – you definitely don’t write shite! Ha!

That Stylish award is well deserved – congratulations.

Now being that you learned to swim before you walk, in some mercurial way, does this justify your love for “fresh” fish. After all, you are FRESH (hence the award).

And that sense of direction thing – sounds like me too. Pops told me a long time ago that if I ever get lost, or need to get my bearings, just lick your finger and stick it in the air. Based on how the wind is blowing, you can always set your NSEW coordinates. I tried this in Brooklyn a few years and was kindly told by a women to “… get away from me with that finger young man and stop being so repulsive.” Be careful of who may be around if you try this.

And what a cool job – researching the animals. I have never seen a Canadian lynx either… and how on earth do you catch a hummingbird for research??

Great post. And congrats!!!! You are awesome.

      Hey thanks!

I’ve tried the just-lick-your-finger thing, but honestly? I still can’t tell. However. Now I know not to try it again in public… HA HA!

You catch birds in what are called mist nets – they have a very fine mesh that can appear almost invisible. You put them up between poles, usually in wooded areas (even with the fine mesh, they’re pretty visible in the open). Birds fly in, get caught, you come along and (very carefully) remove them. Ta-da!

Thanks! And since you’re blog is one of my top favorites I totally have to award you the same. Although I don’t think it means you have to do the steps again, since you already did them. I love your facts btw!

    you’ve been styled 😀
