Happy Valentine’s Day!

February 10, 2011

I am aware this is early – but it’s the last time I’m posting before V-day…

It was my first year in college when I started thinking a lil differently about Valentine’s Day. At the stroke of midnight, my girlfriends and I ran downstairs to the suite of boys we hung out with and attacked them with shaving cream and candy. We spent the day exchanging silly and ridiculous cards, sending each other candy-grams, and getting more than a lil drunky-pants (hey we were 19 – whaddaya want).

None of us spent even a moment wishing we had a boyfriend.

Think what you will about Valentine’s Day (e.g. romantic or overdone or commercialized or anyone really paying attention to who St.Valentine actually was or goddamn it I wish I had a boyfriend), but I always like to take this time to celebrate not just my partner (if I have one – this year I don’t).

I celebrate my girlfriends.

Yes, girls can be crazy and catty and manipulative and gossipy and whiny and bitchy. We can talk shit and stab between shoulder blades and generally play nice-to-ya-face-but-not-to-yer-back. There are some women who uphold every horrible stereotype that has ever been uttered about women.

And yet.

I know, from much experience, there is far and away more compassion and strength and understanding and kindness and honesty among women that cattiness and back-stabbing.

In my life, I am beyond fortunate to have the women I hold near and dear to my heart. They know me, and they love me for who that person is. They have heard my shit and have seen my best. They catch my tears, and aren’t afraid to tell me when I am being an ass. They celebrate and cry and laugh and bitch and commend and discuss and dance with me. Yes – we have fought and argued and yelled at each other, but those times were few and far between. They also served a purpose, and made us stronger.

These are women who were there when I was growing into the person I am now, be that from age 10 or age 25. No matter the distance between us or the days, weeks, or months since last we spoke – they are fundamental to my life.

I can never ever replace them. I am fully aware of how very lucky I am.

I celebrate their love for me, and mine for them, on Valentine’s Day, too. On this particular V-Day, and on this blog, I’d like to celebrate a very specific group of women that I adore.

My burlesque girls are pretty much awesome. We dance because we love it. We dance because it makes us happy. We dance because we believe women can reclaim the beauty of their own bodies, no matter how society defines them. We dance because we believe women can reclaim their sexuality, and celebrate it – whatever that means to them. We dance to entertain, to make people laugh and smile and sigh and, yes, get-turned-on. And, since some of us rock the silks/trapeze/lyra (aerials), sometimes *gasp!* too.

This Valentine’s Day, I celebrate my burlesque lovelies.

Plus, what better way to celebrate the naughty side of it?

... we do dance on bars...

... rockin' the silks (this is what I mean by "aerials")...

Yes... for Halloween last year, there was a stripping mummy...

Thought I knocked a pastie off with a skillet once...

... it's for a good cause!

... baby, would you eat that there snackcracker in your special outfit?

... my baby's leavin' on the 2:19...

Yeah... I'd be the one in thi-hi red leather boots... love those...

Oh, right. We're not just lovely ladies - we do showcase our Boylesque.

Partner balancing. Also pretty much awesome.

... and I said "no teasing, missy!" (yep - that's me on the right.)

...knock 'em dead, girl..

Not even Nikki – having fun with the gfs is the best! One of my gfs is in her late 60s and she is HOT! I hope I look that good when I am her age. Oh please God lol!

      • February 13, 2011 8:44 am

I meant we’re ridiculous – in a good way, of course! 😀 And, yes, it is the best.

Sounds like we’d all like your friend’s genes!

  2. February 10, 2011 2:22 pm

  3. February 10, 2011 5:06 pm

Damn, you got some skills there girlfriend!

Great post again, too bad you don’t show more of that award winning smile of yours but I guess shots of those thigh high boots will have to keep us boys happy for the time being.

    Have a great valentines day!!

    • February 10, 2011 6:07 pm

Those shots keep us girls happy, too. *wink*

    • February 11, 2011 7:14 am

We like to make as many people happy as possible! Enjoyment is nondiscriminatory! 😀

Glad y’all dig us! Wish I could say more so you could check us out for realz tonight, Sunday, and next Friday! *whew* XOXO…

  4. February 10, 2011 5:32 pm

That is really cool. If I had my own religion I would force women to wear thigh highs, fishnets and corsets instead of burkas.
I’ve actually never been to a burlesque show though. Seems like my guy friends would think it is too “gay theater” related and any girlfriend would think its basically a strip show. Taking a date wouldn’t really work…going alone would be creepy.
Kind of sucks because it would seem that being teased like that would be hotter than a skanky strip club.

    • February 11, 2011 7:19 am

Tell your boys I’m not sure what “gay theater” is but I’m confused as to why they wouldn’t want to see boobies. We also perform with a live, kick-ass band, if that helps them get over their fear of being too gay. Because lawd knows we’d want to avoid that…

Burlesque is also not your typical strip show. It’s definitely meant to be entertaining and a tease. 😉

      • February 11, 2011 6:40 pm

Well I have some trouble getting people to go to an art museum because some think it is too “gay”. So anything involving a stage would be all the harder sell..
It is just kind of sad that your potential biggest fans will just shut themselves out essentially.
I need a date blog, all you people on here make me jealous .

      • February 13, 2011 8:48 am

Unfortunate that your friends are so close-minded. I don’t mean that offensively – I mean that seriously. Haven’t they ever heard the term “Renaissance man”?

Actually, I don’t think we ever have a problem with fans. And, to be completely frank, Nate, I am ok without fans who worry about being seen as too “gay”. I’m not being bitchy here, I’m being honest. Bums me out, really.

Include date stuff in your blog on occasion! Then I’d actually be able to comment on it! I’ve checked out, but a lot of it isn’t stuff I know well… aside from a reference to R. I know R ~ I can program that! But for completely different things… science-y things…

  5. February 10, 2011 9:13 pm

    Damn. That is all.

    • February 11, 2011 7:21 am

      Thanks, love. 😀

Hey – any woman (or man, really, there’s always Boylesque) willing to work it can be part of our company. Self confidence and loving your body are very sexy.

As for the aerials? Yeah… that takes some time. I’d love to do it, but hot damn it’s hard!

Awesome shots Nikki. I can truly respect the physical strength it takes to seemingly dangle in the air. I have had my time on a pole and I can tell that wow my arms were killing me the next day – most of my body hurt and it gave me a whole new respect for the women that can do this and make it look so damn easy!!!! I am not a fan of strip clubs but this is much more fun and entertaining – LOVE LOVE LOVE seamed thigh highs!!!!!!!!! Have several pairs. LOVE LOVE LOVE thigh high boots, short skirts and lacy things… These are a few of my favorite things……

    • February 13, 2011 8:52 am

It’s amazing the strength these girls have – they truly kick some major ass. And yes, they make it look so easy!

OMG I LOVE seamed fishnets, period. SO HOT. I had a pair with a red seam – was SO PISSED when I put a hole through them during a quick costume change. Thigh-high boots, leather, lace, lingerie, my tassels with cherries on them… all my fav things too. One of the things I love about burlesque is being able to dress up! SUCH fun!

LOL I guess I have my own show – in my garage!!!! Hubby loves to watch and I love to dress up AND I love that he loves it too!!!!!! Blessed am I! After all what are camcorders and DVD burners for anyway LOLOLOLOL!!! I love to hear – you really nailed that one honey! Keep it up!

  7. February 12, 2011 2:14 pm

Awesome! I’m such a big fan of those photos! They’re great! Can I ask how you got involved in burlesque? I’ve always thought it would be fun…

Also? Valentines Day isn’t really a huge thing in NZ, but I really like your take on it. It’s the perfect time to celebrate the lovely ladies in your life!

    • February 13, 2011 8:55 am

The other girls started this company about three years ago after a trip to Las Vegas. They went to a burlesque show and thought “we could do that, and it’s something [my area] needs.” It’s been very collective, organic, and creative since day one, all of us have day jobs, but we make it work together. It is REALLY fun. We also have workshops, etc, so it’s too bad you’re in NZ! 😉

Sometimes I wish V-Day wasn’t such a big deal here either – I am one of those that hates commercialization of holidays. SO – it’s more fun when you make it your own and a time to celebrate, regardless of the buy-buy-buy bullshit.

  8. February 13, 2011 4:25 pm

Happy Valentine’s Day indeed! You are athletic and beautiful!! Wow, thanks for sharing this! Some great photographs- tastefully and artfully done. I’m jealous, you got it going on!!! MY LORD

    • February 14, 2011 10:47 am

😀 Thanks love! IMHO, all women are beautiful ~ it’s a state of mind that’s the key…

  9. February 14, 2011 3:24 pm

I mean no offense either, I don’t think I can be offended actually.
I wasn’t making any kind of suggestions, just observations from my life. I’ve lost touch with all my old “goth club” guy friends and now just know a bunch of meatheads hah.
That is really cool you know R for real things and not fake things like finance..I’ve been trying to learn some of the great finance packages but the help system is frustrating.
I’m just going to make a date blog, this one was always more like a journal than for other people to read.

    • February 14, 2011 5:54 pm

I didn’t take offense at all – it’s difficult to offend me, as well. Tell your meatheads no on thinks they’re gay. 🙂

R for real things? Well, as real as stats get anyway… 😉

Keep me posted as you develop your new blog!

  10. February 17, 2011 3:12 am

Sweet baby Jesus!!! I was going to comment on the posts but, being a very visual creature, those burlesque pics are just amazing! I love them and the women!

Funny thing is that I’m going to be emceeing a burlesque show in June. =) Summer can’t get her fast enough!

    Love the post, dear.

    • February 26, 2011 3:04 pm

Thanks. We do our best. I figured it’s nice to have some visuals once in awhile. They say a picture is worth a thousand words.

  11. February 21, 2011 10:06 pm

This looks amazing – empowering, sexy and liberating. Love it. I’m a little jealous – I don’t know if I’ll ever be comfortable enough with my body to do anything like this. I’m hoping some of your confidence and sexuality will rub off on me just by reading your adventures 🙂

    • February 26, 2011 3:07 pm

Hey – we are always looking for new dancers! 😉

Part of the point of our company is encouraging women to love their bodies and to understand how much sex appeal comes from confidence and enjoying who you are being in your own skin. We’re not all size twos – and, through the company and talking with friends and people who come to our shows, one thing we women often forget is that a size two is not everyone’s fantasy. That’s just what we’re taught to believe via the media.

I hope it rubs off too! Join us!

Whew Nikki you are inspiring. Just this last weekend went to a club with hubby and a couple of his friends. They just so happened to have a cage! All these 20 somethings taking pix of themselves posing around it yet not dancing in it. Wuss! So yep with the cheer on from hubby and pals this 47 yr old took it on! Whoo hoo! Love belly chains they shimmy and sparkle! Had a great time and considered the best cage dancer of the night! So there at any age its all about the confidence and givin it all you got!!!!

    • February 26, 2011 3:12 pm

YES!!! I love it! Rock it, lady!

Sounds like an awesome evening – and yes we can all be sexy when we want to be! Way to show those young-uns how it’s done! Wish I had been there to witness and cheer you on too!

      Cheers, love!

  13. February 27, 2011 12:53 pm

I just went to my first burlesque show the other night (with a date … it was his idea!) — we had a fabulous time.

And now, seeing these pics… you and your gals look hot! I’ve suddenly decided that I’m going to wear fishnet stockings on my next date with him… 🙂

    • February 28, 2011 9:10 am

Love it! Definitely wear fishnet stockings – with a garter! 😀 It will make you feel sexy, too!

This is exactly the impact I want to have – yay for women feeling sexy!

Yes, this is my VDay post from last year. Still works. 😀

Love the red boots! Great, wholesome teasing (I’m rolling my eyes). Fun post! I really loved all the pictures. I had no idea you did Burlesque. How long? Ironically, we watched Cher’s movie, Burlesque the night before. Lots of fun too.

I’m looking forward to the next show!

    • February 16, 2012 8:37 pm

I love them red boots too…

I’ve been with the company for… gawd, three years now? At least. Many of the girls are classically trained dancers and aerialists, I just do it for fun!

Come join! Our next show is in April – the theme is ANIMALS! 😀

      • February 18, 2012 7:15 am

Sounds like fun! Where are your shows?

        • February 18, 2012 12:02 pm

          I’m supposed to be anonymous, so I shouldn’t say… east coast…

        • February 18, 2012 1:13 pm

I hear you anonymous. The same as my east coast? …just trying to catch a performance..
